...more...]]> This Tuesday night, Oct. 11, is the book launch party at Once Upon A Crime for the fourth Birder Murder mystery titled “Falcon Finale.” I’m really excited about it, since I’ve been inviting all sorts of folks to stop in: readers, birders, U of MN Raptor Center staffers, National Eagle Center pals, friends, family, librarians, media folk. With each new book, I feel like my world is expanding as I meet new experts to help me out with research, not to mention the new readers I’m meeting at appearances and book signings.

If you’ve never been to Once Upon A Crime, you’re in for a treat – literally and figuratively. Pat and Gary, the store owners, are the nationally-recognized awesome hosts, and they’ve got the Raven itself on their shelf to prove it!  This past spring, OUAC was honored with the Raven Award by the Mystery Writers of America for “outstanding achievement in the  mystery field outside the realm of creative writing.” Be sure to check out the black statue in the shop when you come for the party. And please don’t feed the bird!

...more...]]> I put away the last bit of Christmas decor yesterday, so now it’s time to dig in to a new year. Though from my office window, it looks more like a case of needing to dig out – last month was the snowiest December here in the Twin Cities in 30 years! What’s sort of funny is that I clearly remember that winter 30 years ago, because it was the year my husband, infant daughter, and I first moved to Minnesota. In fact, we drove here from Nebraska on the one day between two blizzards that the interstate highway was open. What a welcome that was!

I’m working hard to finish the fourth Bob White Birder Murder by the end of the month. Actually, I’m finding it a bit therapeutic, since in this adventure, Bob and friends spend the bulk of the book in Flagstaff, Arizona, in August. So I get to visualize sunny skies, dry heat, and fabulous mountain/red rock scenery. Flagstaff used to be one of my favorite destinations the few years we lived in Arizona back in the 1990s, and it’s fun to write it into a book.

I’ve also got some exciting events coming up in the next few months – I’ll be reading from my books at the Savage Library as part of the MELSA Legacy program, and in March, I’ll be giving presentations at the International Festival of Owls in Houston, MN, and the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN.

My good friends at Millie’s Deli in Chanhassen are hosting me for two mornings of book selling and signing, Nov. 19 and 20, to help me raise funds to restock the local food shelf PROP. We’ re also inviting patrons to bring in items for the shelves, and as an incentive, I’m offering a dollar off a book for each item brought in. In addition, I’ll donate $1 from the sale of each book to PROP, so I’m hoping for a good turn-out of readers to help me help PROP provide holiday food for those in our community who are struggling financially.

I’m indebted to the folks at Millie’s for offering to host the breakfast-time benefit – Chef Tom and his crew not only have the comfort-food thing down pat, but they really care about their customers, so when I started looking for a good way for me to give back to the community, I ran my idea past Tom. After a bit of discussion over Millie’s Florentine omelet and blueberry pancakes, my daughter suggested collecting food items at the same time, and we knew we had a winner! Now I feel especially lucky to have this opportunity – not just to sell books, but to visit with friends and readers while we do a good thing for those in need.

And…oh yes!…there’s another reason I’m happy to be at Millie’s for the benefit. It’s called research for a future installment of the Birder Murder series. I may be in the midst of writing the fourth book right now, but the fifth one is already taking shape in my head and there’s this charming little deli Bob and his friends like to visit….
