Off to press and out of the office – hurray!

Now that the fifth Birder Murder - A Murder of Crows - is safely in the hands of my publisher, I'm planning to take a writing break this summer and instead, do some birding! Two weekends ago, my hubby and I explored the Rapids Lake unit of the Minnesota River Valley and were thrilled with the variety of habitat there. We saw a dozen birds as we stepped out of the car, and the place was thick with Baltimore Orioles and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. It was such a treat to actually get out and see the birds I write about! A Murder of Crows is slated for release in September, and I'm already lining up booksignings and appearances. Happy Spring! ...more...

“Falcon Finale” meets the Raven!

This Tuesday night, Oct. 11, is the book launch party at Once Upon A Crime for the fourth Birder Murder mystery titled “Falcon Finale.” I’m really excited about it, since I’ve been inviting all sorts of folks to stop in: readers, birders, U of MN Raptor Center staffers, National Eagle Center pals, friends, family, librarians, media folk. With each new book, I feel like my world is expanding as I meet new experts to help me out with research, not to mention the new readers I’m meeting at appearances and book signings.

If you’ve never been to Once Upon A Crime, you’re in for a treat – literally and figuratively. Pat and Gary, the store owners, are the nationally-recognized awesome hosts, and they’ve got the Raven itself on their shelf to prove it! This past spring, OUAC was honored with the Raven Award by the Mystery Writers of America for “outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing.” Be sure to check out the black statue in the shop when you come for the party. And please don’t feed the bird!

Heading north

I’m making my annual trip to Two Harbors, MN, next week, and I can’t wait! Even though the fall colors will be past their peak, it’s always a delight to be up north and leave my responsibilities and Twin Cities busyness behind for a few days. This past month has indeed been busy with promoting the third book in the Birder Murder series – a book launch, an author’s brunch, a book fair and lots of marketing both locally and online. I’m going to make a stop at the Wild Birds Unlimited in Duluth next Thursday to sign copies of “A Bobwhite Killing” on my way to Two Harbors, but then I’m ‘off-duty’ for the weekend. If you’re in the Duluth area, stop in and we’ll chat at WBU – I’ll be there from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.

Now that the leaves are down, I realized it’s time to think a little about the approaching holidays. Yes, I’ve picked up a few gifts for giving already (if you’ve got birders or mystery lovers on your list, I highly recommend a little series called the Bob White Birder Murders – okay, I’m biased!), but more than that, I’m trying to figure out the best ways to truly celebrate the season and I think I’ve come up with a good idea. I’ve talked with my friend who owns Millie’s Deli in Chanhassen, and we’re putting together a book benefit in the deli to raise some supplies and money for the local food shelves. How will you share your gifts this year?
